The Social Media 5 Gems MEME

As social media/digital experts, we tap each other every day on our blogs, podcasts, tweets, etc, to find the latest examples of amazing social media work. The problem is, many folks are stuck on everyone else’s favourites like Dell, SouthWest or any other of the top ten usual suspect/success stories. Recently Peter Kim crowdsourced a great resource of 234 Social Media Marketing Examples. In the spirit of his “Stone Turning” efforts, harnessing the potential of WOM promised by Social Media, here’s a chance to expose your diamond in the rough with the “Social Media Five Gems Meme”.

Perhaps it’s your own work, perhaps it’s something you want to give kudos to; a project you think needs a kick start. Share them with us, this could turn into some great karma – leave no stone unturned.

In the spirit of a good blog meme, please follow these five rules:

  1. Link to your tagger and post these rules.
  2. List five Social Media projects that deserve better exposure.
  3. Tag EIGHT “Social Media / Digital Experts” at the end of your post and list their names.
  4. Let them know they’ve been tagged.
  5. Tag your post “Five Gems” so we can search for all of these great examples.

Here are my 5 Social Media gems hiding under the stones.

  1. Itatu Orphan Care Blog and Facebook Page. A small orphan care centre in Malawi, Africa run by an elementary school teacher in Toronto. Itatu has a Blog ( http://itatuorphancare.com/ ) and a Facebook Page. This amazing, selfless effort is run by my sister, Jennifer Douma, who is doing this without government or NGO assistance. She dares to make a change in this world and as such is my number #1 pick for someone who needs more exposure and support in the social media landscape.
  2. Sick Kids Foundation on Twitter. Sick Kids Foundation uses Twitter to announce major events, list their “heroes of the month” and more – an amazing cause using an amazing medium. They deserve more followers than their current 70ish.
  3. The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Facebook. I’m a big fan of this Facebook fan page. The content goes beyond what you would expect. The 411 details and hours are clear, but there’s a ton of great videos, exhibit previews and event photos on this page as well. I’ve used this page as an example of a good use of Facebook more than once with clients.
  4. Avon Canada’s Call for the Cure SMPR In support of breast cancer research, Avon Canada begins the ‘Call for the Cure,’ a grassroots awareness campaign to raise funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance. They’ve entered the social media space with a savvy Social Media Press Release (SMPR) put together by my colleagues at H&K in Toronto. Another great effort executed using an amazing social media tool.
  5. Euphonic Sound’s blog and podcast. Euphonic Sound’s “Studio Manifesto” blog and podcast. Sound engineer James Pew knows good audio, and he also knows a lot about the recording business. Based out of Toronto, Canada, he runs his blog “Studio Manifesto” where he earns his voice and expands his product offering using social media tools and philosophy. He’s already had direct communication with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and has been interviewed in traditional media channels, including “Breakfast Television”. During my days at MacLaren McCann, I had the pleasure of working with James and Euphonic Sound when we recorded the GM Canada six part podcast series, “Aesthetic Intent”.

Completely separate of this exercise I created a wiki to capture the top Canadian social media examples. I’ve started filling it out, but everybody should add their own favourites and/or personal work here: http://www.socialmediacasestudies.wetpaint.com

I’ll capture as many of the 5 gems as I can and update the wiki as they come in. Anybody who participates, I think this is a great marrage of opportunity.

    good times.
