A couple of weeks ago Facebook surpassed MySpace as the most-trafficked social media site in the world (comScore). What does it mean to carry a moniker such as this? I decided to crack open the Facebook ads and pages application to look at the numbers on a global level.
Insights:
A few surprises turned up in Canada’s numbers. 1 in 3 Canadians now have a Facebook profile; compared to 1 in 10 in the US. About half of Torontonians have a Facebook profile and the number is still climbing from its current 1.35 million people. According to a 2006 estimate, Halifax’s population is 280 000 people; with over 268, 000 Facebook profiles, Halifax winters must be worse than I thought!
Excluding the UK, Canada has more people on Facebook than all of Europe combined. There’s plenty of opportunity in Europe considering over the last five months Facebook has released the site in more than 15 languages, including Spanish, French, German and Russian.
Globally, there seems to be a slight skew to females in most places. Italy, India, Turkey and UAE are amongst very few exceptions.
Countries that I didn’t expect to see in the top 8 are Chile, Turkey and Columbia. Maybe it’s the diversity that explains why Canada is doing so well! Canada is well known for being one of the most open, culturally diverse countries in the world. Facebook is a great way freely express those ideas.
