The Boom and Echo of a Communications Revolution

Culture Boom, Commerce Echo

There is a significant cultural revolution going on right now which affects all forms of communication. This boom is redefining every aspect of how we communicate and relate with one another. Social media is the echo to that boom and we should all remember that people are not mediums for our messaging – agencies and their clients are the mediums for people’s needs. Adherence to this thinking is what will determine success and failure in this space in the coming year.

The boom: Facebook
18 million Americans
7 million Canadians
7.5 million from the UK.
1 million Torontonians connecting in a way they find difficult to do on the street.

The echo: Yuwie
Get paid to be connected

You can even have a boom/echo within a boom:

Boom:
When I was your Age, Pluto was a Planet
The facebook group: “When I was your Age, Pluto was a Planet” :
1,222,358 members, 3093 discussion topics, 50036 wall posts. $0 to admin

Echo:
Molson Canadian Nation

The facebook group: Molson Canadian Nation:
17,252 members, 57 discussion topics, 707 wall posts. $50,000/mth to admin (est)

Boom: Second Life: Watch the World(s)

Echo
: Second Life: – Coke and Crayon

Boom: Flickr Visulizer:
Flickr Visualizer
Folksonnomy Flickr photos of everyone, by everyone, for everyone.

Echo: Made of Japan
Made of Japan
Onitsuka Tiger

When I hear of marketing strategies which duplicate a boom in communications, I wonder: have you ever heard an echo louder than the boom?

I believe adherence to this thinking is what will determine success and failure in this space in the shake down year ahead.

Here is hoping we all make it to 09′.

Happy Holidays
Collin
