As Gov. Schwarzenegger urges an end to the Hollywood writers’ strike over access to digital dollars, a new level of remix-ability and creative liberation emerges from Hollywood North. The Tracey Fragments, a new film from Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo, Highway 69) is taking the right to remix, and creative commons to a new extreme. The concept is summarized with this statement from the official movie site:
Tracey: Re-Fragmented makes available all the footage from the shoot of the film for users to download and re-edit their own related projects including music videos, new trailers or to re-edit the entire movie themselves. The creative commons licensed initiative also makes available the score of the movie by indie collective Broken Social Scene.
There’s money where that mouth is; four branded “Bit Torrent” links complete with script, readily available for download. The page continues:
The re-editing initiative also has a competitive element with Bruce McDonald and his editors selecting the best from the projects from Canada to win an Apple Final Cut Pro prize pack. The winning project will also appear in the bonus features on the DVD release of the Tracey Fragments.
The site also offers a comic book PDF-download version of the story and a blog which chronicles film-related events, awards, openings, press etc. Bruce McDonald explains.
“The Tracey Fragments is a film that fully embraces experimentation and teamwork. I wanted to find out if that experience exists on the Internet and give others the chance to experiment and play with some beautifully shot footage of a world class actress in a free form environment. I hope people make their own feature films, short films, rock videos, trailers, experimental films and personal manifestos out of The Tracey Fragments.”
Once again Bruce McDonald demonstrates his “Rock and Roll” ability to snuff convention, jar creativity and define a new storytelling technique… I can’t wait to see the movie!
A radical do.

good question Curm… Same one I ask about Radio Head’s pay what you can scheme… I’m not buying it long term. Still… social media is very new with lots to be explored. I think this re-frag program is a good move. I don’t think that anyone would deny marketing as the motivation. Radiohead on the other hand…. They behave like they are trying to save the world or something… I downloaded it for free… It’s not “pay what you can”… it’s “pay what you think its worth”. Nothing until i hear it is my response. I would pay a week later.. now that is radical trust
