Independent music is the wave of the future. Just ask the Bastard Fairies. They’re not waiting around for a big record label to sweep in with some million dollar contract to “make them”. In fact, if they did sign such a contract, the first people they might need to sue are themselves… but I’m getting ahead of myself.
Let’s rewind to a few weeks ago when I stumble across a YouTube video on my RSS reader; I can’t remember which blog (sorry). The video features an 8ish year old girl who offers an explosive rant that slams Bill 0’Reilly (Fox News), the religious right and the establishment.
The Coolest 8 Year Old In The World Talks About O’Reilly

Politics aside, I hope you continue on because this story is just getting started.
I tend to agree with just over 99% of this kid’s rant and when I realise her sound off is an ad for something called thebastardfairies.com, I quickly follow the link…
Okay, they’re a music band of some sort. In big, bold letters a headline reads: DOWNLOAD THE ALBUM NOW!!! and an inset paragraph below the album art and next to the download links offers:
“This album is free for all to download, and we just ask one simple thing. Please make copies for all your friends and ask them to do the same, and so on and so forth. You are our publicity, our promotion, our distribution and our friends. Please help us spread the word of The Bastard Fairies by sharing our music for free.”
And that’s it. One web page, a few MySpace links, 12 songs and all the album art for free.
We continue to witness through P2P file sharing that fans are more likely to discover a band when the music is free. If they like the band, they’re also more likely go to their concert, buy a t-shirt etc.
The Bastard Fairies understand that the best ad for their music is their music. Bravo. Offering free music is something that the major record labels tend to shut down, even sue fans over. That’s why those labels are doomed and the future of the music business lies with an artist’s radical trust in their fanbase.
But wait. That little girl makes fun of Bill O’Rielly… This can’t be over.
During the research for this post, I also stumble across this response from Bill on Fox News. (Re-published on YouTube)
Wait a minute… did I really just see an image of the Terminator wearing an iPod with the headline “Rise of the Machines”?
It’s no surprise that Bill O’Reilly is offended by a little girl asking him for empathy. He makes it pretty clear that anyone who contradicts him is either a monster or the victim of one. What shocks me is why he would choose to give the video over three minutes discussion on his show. This major exposure will no doubt contribute to thousands more views of the ad, contributing to even more downloads from the Bastard Fairies’ site. Theirs is a traffic log I’d love to see. (for the record, I made the request but no response from the band as of yet)
I imagine this ad cost the Bastard Fairies less the 1k to put together (probably a lot less). And from this they’ve logged over 1.3 million views, national coverage on a major network and the privilege of making Bill O’Rielly look like a chump.
Bill O’Reilly, you remind me why they call it the Boob Tube.
Bastard Fairies, you are radical super heros.
Little Girl, you are the coolest kid on the block.
… And we’re all going to hell.

I also love how O’Reilly’s stock response is, “we won’t publicize them, but we know who they are” — as if the cops will be kicking down their door any minute.
Humour is not currently a strength of the right wing.

Real child abuse is to force them into religious beliefs before they understand that there is no god. And in what way is this child any more abused than any child actor or actress reading a script? Real child abuse is hoping that this family should be hated by their neighbours.

I hope this child actor’s parents consider a lawsuit against Fox News.

Great point Bertrand
Imagine a world where everyone who has a different opinion is ostracized from society!?!? Sounds like the world the girl describes and the world that Bill clearly wants. I just wish it was Bill that would be ostracized. I guess that is downfall of any social ideal… they have to include the idiots.

That frame of O’Reilly with the Rise of the Machines graphic really needs to be on a T-shirt, with one more headline above the frame: “Know your enemy.”
The reality gulf is widening.

that is a great idea.
This graphic made me laugh out loud the first time I saw this… I honestly thought this was some sort of Colbert joke or something… no, it’s real, he means it.

Locking the kid in a room and forcing them to watch O’Reilly, Now that would be considered child abuse.

Wendy Murphy needs a serious reality check if she thinks this is the “ultimate inhumane treatment of a child.”

No doubt… She is seriously lacking perspective on reality. Thanks for the comment Working Girl.
By the way… you have a great blog. Thanks for leaving a note so I could find it.
All the best.

That little girl is right on . I must thank Mr. O’Reilly. I would not have known about many of the left wing books that are out there. I would not know of the tshirts that have all the soldiers names on it. Yes and I loved that movie ‘Redacted ‘. Talk about being a dumbass lol
